“There is an art to the craft as well as a craft to the art”

Greetings Mysterians – it’s time…time to gear up and prepare for Transformus ’09. Make your lists, gather your supplies, and check your camping gear.

More importantly, it’s time to get your art on!

The creative process is a personal journey and possibly a very cathartic and expressive statement. It’s multi-dimensional, it’s provocative… or not. Many a conversation and debate have ensued over art, the artist and the artistic process. In the Burner Community, art pushes limits; it exceeds the wine and cheese undertones that usually prevail – thank god. We are able to express ourselves freely and our art is no exception. A recent debate amongst the art grant team leaders led us to a possible mantra for 2009: “There is an art to the craft as well as a craft to the art.” Talk amongst yourselves and to yourself about what this means to you…or not. Email us what you think – you might get published…or not.

This year the Board of Directors has allotted $10,000 towards you creative freaks out there. That’s not a typo folks – TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. Can you say “hell yeah”? This is very exciting as it is the most money allotted yet to the Transformus burner community for its freaky creative process.

The breakdown is as follows:
$8,800 towards creative grants
($600 to the Effigy & $600 to the Temple)

Deadline for receipt of all Creative Grant proposals is 10:00pm EST April 15, 2009.

Below you will find the criteria for the submittal process. Once you have written your proposal email it to one of the following emails: Creative grants should be emailed to: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

We encourage freedom of expression in how you present your creativity, but each Creativity Grant application must be submitted electronically and contain the following information:

Your (real name) contact information to include physical mail address, email addresses, and day and night phone numbers. To protect your privacy, Transformus LLC will not ever sell or distribute your personal information or use it outside of its organization.

A detailed description of the project: We want to know everything there is to know about what we are funding...so don’t forget to describe the physical aspects (such as dimensions and materials) as well as the intangibles (such as interactivity and content). Please tell us what it means to you and what you’re trying to communicate to the community. Please tell us what your plans are for the project after Transformus is concluded for the year.

Safety: Please let us know what safety precautions you have planned. Projects must be able to withstand weather conditions, pedestrian traffic, interaction both intentional and accidental, and of course if it is to burn at the art burn Sunday – there must be a burn/safety plan clearly articulated. If it will burn, tell us what kind of environmental protection you will provide, what kinds of safety gear you will be bringing, and what type of burn perimeter you’ll have. If you are going to burn it in the Sunday night artist burn, please tell us. If you are going to use any kind of flame effect, please describe the design of the rigs and setups that you will be using in enough detail that we can judge if it will be a safety hazard at Deerfields, including your safety plans and safety gear. If you are going to be creating an art vehicle, especially an art boat, describe to us how it will get around and what kinds of safety gear you are going to be providing. ***For over the top art and dangerous art pieces, such as flame cannons and mobile art, please familiarize yourself with the unique environment of Deerfields before applying, and specifically explain how your art piece will interact with the environment and the participants.

An itemized budget including material costs, transportation of materials to and from Mysteria, equipment rental, and expendables (fuel, water) etc. is expected. Please be sure to total your budget. We do not pay for camping expenses like food, water, camping gear, your ticket, and your personal transport to and from the event. Have you researched your needs and realistically assessed costs? We want to know how prepared you are to go through with the project creation process.

A schedule and timeline should be supplied reflecting your budget and project management goals e.g., when materials will be purchased, when stages of construction will be completed, etc. Please include an onsite timeline as well which details the set up and cleanup schedules.

Detailed drawings, photographs, architectural diagrams, sketches, plans, short movies, or other graphic illustrations of your project.

A well thought out clean-up plan, with adequate crew to complete it. YOU MAY NOT LEAVE ANYTHING AT MYSTERIA. That’s right if it comes with your project it leaves with your project. There will be no exceptions.

Team Information: Who are you? Specifically, tell us if you have attended Transformus before, if you have received arts grants before, what kind of an artistic background you have. (Please note we are only asking about you for our own records and this information will not be used in judging the merits of your application concerning a possible arts grant award.)

Any fund-raising events done for Art Grants, Effigy, Temple, or Theme Camps need to have the disclaimer that the events are not Transformus sponsored events.

If you can not include some or all of the required information in your grant request, please explain why and we will take that information into consideration when awarding grants. We also don’t expect every aspect of your project to be set in stone when you apply or during the actual project creation process, but we do expect that you will have a general and good idea of everything you need to accomplish in order to successfully complete the project and install it at Transformus

Format for submitting Grant Applications: Please format your proposals in any combination of word documents, pdf’s, jpg’s and excel. Multi media presentations (avi, wmv) can be accepted with prior approval from the art grant team.

Deadline for receipt of all Creativity Grant applications is 10:00pm EST April 15, 2009.

Creativity Grant applications should be emailed to: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Transformus is a place to share radical self-expression and artistic creativity with one another each summer. While currency is removed from the event itself, the reality remains that it takes cash to make art happen. Transformus LLC realizes this and helps seed the event with artistic expression through the fair distribution of Creativity Grants.

Here’s how our 2009 granting process works:

We’ll receive applications from today through Wednesday April 15, 2009 10:00pm EST. All forms of creativity may apply. Applications will be blinded and forwarded to our jury, who will then have time to ask questions and score them based on provided criteria. Our Transformus Art Jury will be comprised of all community members who wish to participate and can commit to the dates of the jury process (April 15 to May 3, 2009.) Those managing this year’s grant program, team leads, and those individuals/teams applying for grants are not eligible to be on the Jury, this also includes spouses of mentioned peoples.

After the Jury has had ample time to review and score the applicants, they will convene via private conference call and decide on the final dollar amounts each grant winner will receive.

Please remember that we can fund only a portion of those who apply, and each individual grant application will be limited to $599 maximum distributions.

Prepaid debit cards or checks will be allotted to the grant winners shortly thereafter by Transformus’ treasurer, with all monies fully distributed by or prior to May 9, 2009. Accompanying each award will be an invoice each recipient must sign and return to Transformus LLC promising said services. Any unused funds must be returned to the Transformus BOD, and at no point in time should unused funds be given to another grant recipient. All receipts must be turned into the LLC as soon as possible upon arrival to the Transformus Event.

A new addition to the 2009 Art Grant process is allowing multiple artists to apply for a grant for the same art piece. This addition will hopefully promote and nurture growth of large scale installations this year and years to come.

The intention of allowing multiple artists to request grants and each receive individual funding is NOT meant to meet all the funding for a project and this should be at the discretion of the jury. The reason for not exceeding the $599 limit is for tax purposes. Any questions? contact the Creativity Grant Team. Here is a detailed example to explain:

Submission: “The Phoenix”: total cost= $2,500. One artist can apply, but will only be eligible for an allotment of $599 maximum. If 4 or 5 artists from the team apply for separate grants for the same art piece, then all could be eligible to win grant monies.

Grant funds will not be awarded for and do not apply to the following items:
  • There will be no funds allotted to individual Theme Camps, but will consider funding a piece placed within Theme Camp areas.
  • There will be no funding artists’ time, labor, or transportation costs, but will consider funding raw materials and material transportation costs (outside of artists’ existing travel expenses).

The criteria our jury will be using to judge the applications are based on various concepts such as:

  • Will this project involve and inspire a broad spectrum of the Mysteria community throughout its various phases?
  • Does this project fall in line with our Leave No Trace ethics and will it work well within the pristine Deerfields venue and is it safe?
  • Do the artists’ ideas seem realistic and well thought-out enough for a volunteer crew to fully realize?
  • Does the project promote participation and interaction?
  • Does the jury like the ideas presented?

For 2009 the Effigy and Temple Design submissions will be handled as part of a separate submittal and decision process than other creativity applications.

If you are submitting a proposal for Effigy and/or Temple design, the following criteria also apply:

  • All standard caveats for Arts Grants applications apply to Temple and Effigy design submissions.
  • Effigy and Temple Submissions must be received no later than 10pm on April 15, 2009 in electronic format.
Effigy design submittals should be emailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
Temple design submittals should be emailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

  • The Effigy will be the focus of the burn on Saturday night and must be burned in the burn field no matter what. All LNT (Leave No Trace) guidelines must be followed at all times before, during and post event setup and breakdown.
  • The Temple will be the focus of the burn on Sunday night and must be burned in the burn field no matter what. All LNT (Leave No Trace) guidelines must be followed at all times before, during and post event setup and breakdown.
  • Both the Effigy and the Temple designs must contain some form of Bamboo and be no taller than 30 feet high. All Art Installations, Effigy, and Temple must enforce all LNT principles and nothing may be left behind post event re: nails, wood, etc.
  • The Effigy and Temple designs will be selected by a separate committee than other arts applications. This committee will consist of 1=BOD member 2=PC members, and 2=From Art Jury to be determined by the Art Grant Team Leads.
  • Any fund-raising events done for Arts Grants, Effigy, Temple, or Theme Camps need to use the disclaimer that the events are not Transformus sponsored events.

Now get out there and create some freaky burner art!!
