The Creativity Grants team is proud to announce this year’s recipients...
Below is a description of all 16 projects. Please make an effort to visit each artist and experience their gift. There will be visual, performance, sound, and of course FIRE - experiences to tickle every sense of your being. A grand mixture of single pieces that even as a whole make a beautiful installation – that’s what Transformus is - strong individuals who are a beautiful whole. Please join us Friday evening for an artists’ reception at town hall.
Blazeebo by Scot-o-Matic. Stone Mountain, GA
...Deep in the midst of Mysteria, a trio of flame-spewing arches forms a fiery open-air gazebo. Curved copper pipes shoot propane-fueled flame effects skyward, from 39 top-mounted nozzles. Is it a performance stage, or just a place to hang out? It’s
both! come inside, dance, drum, do a striptease, spin fire, play music,
make out, invite someone to flog you, or just sit back and soak it all
in. Got a kickass performance piece that begs for a blazing stage? Bring it on! The Blazeebo is an open, interactive space for everyone to use and enjoy. Who knows what will happen in and around it? That, my dear mysterians, is up to you...
Litt Valhalla by Boarhead of Myschievia. Dallas, TX
An authentic reproduction of the Viking Chieftains house found buried at Gokstad farm in Norway.
Creaking timbers and twisting ropes welcome all through the canvas
doorways for a respite upon the hay-bed, an old world beacon of calm in
a sea of glitter and glowie things. Candle light will flicker off many
a raised horn-o-mead at Transformus 2009.
Steambug by PyroCelt. Greensboro, NC
Look, up on the mountain! Is it a bug? Is it a zeppelin? Is it a strip joint? It’s not your father’s Oldsmobile, that’s for damn sure.
It’s STEAMBUG! Deciding he needed to ramp his participation up 100
notches, PyroCelt and his musical crew will be bringing an art car with
style. Their Audio Assault zeppelin bug/DJ booth/stripper stage will
bring art (visual, musical, movement and of course participatory) to
Mysteria. Stop by the Steambug for some wholesome stripping, spinning, and artsy fun. Sure to be a hit with the hipsters!
Fire-Reactive Projections (aka: Fire Chalkboard) by Intrinsic. Asheville, NC
This
project uses bluetooth and infrared cameras to capture the movements of
one (1) flame in front of a screen. These movements interact with the
projected imagery, manipulating photos, mixing videos or painting with
fire. Fire spinners will have a chance to use their skills to create in
a whole new way, and others will be able to interact with it using an
LED pen. Fire fun for the whole family!

Behold the mysterious glowy letters! The bold consonants and their
bewitching vowels! You look for meaning! You seek order in the chaos!
You would like to buy an "E.” Without you it's not TRANSFORMUS; it's just “MFSNRURSAOT.”

Whalesong by Egg Syntax. Asheville, NC
"Whalesong"
is a series of sculptures developed using mechanical engineering
software and laser-cut from acrylic. They explore balance, movement,
and the relationship between the virtual and the real.
Glowing Tree Biscuits by Ree Ree, Charlotte, NC
This piece disconnects the participant from their natural surroundings using elements that are familiar but still very different from what they are perceived to be. Why squirrels? This is one of the few acceptable rodents tolerated among humans; they live and feed around humans without assault (relatively). What is it that makes them so different from other vermin? This discretion is challenged once you remove the surface layer and see what lies beneath. Some things are seen in their true form at night rather then day. Hopefully this piece can intrigue if not entertain participants so that they in turn can encourage others to seek out the same experience they had while visiting the Biscuits. Why Glowing Tree Biscuits?
Because it provokes interest, and highlights a possible hillbilly
description of experiencing radioactive squirrels in trees.
Roving Random Chaos Unit by Michael Folliett. Asheville, NC
Your voice has never been heard so well as it will be with the Roving Random Chaos Unit. This Project will
allow quieter Mysterians to amplify their ideas/ voice/ inner sounds/
feelings/ and express themselves in an even larger more communal and
creative way. The best part is we bring the sound to their camp…
offering everybody the chance to interact with other passerby
Mysterians. Beware of talking rocks!
The Mass Burn Unit by Knagi. Brunswick, OH
The Mass Burn Unit is an array of 8 computer controlled flame effects. Need we say more? Grab your proximity suit, folks, it’s going to be a hot time on the mountain!
Gypsy Art Bar by Sandstorm. Asheville, NC
Down by the lower lake and left your drink bottle at camp? Working like a dog on the effigy and dying of thirst? Fear not, the Gypsy Art Bar
is at your service. Carrying their artistic man-powered bevy service to
another level, The gypsies will be back in full flounce to provide you
with a tasty ounce.
Beaver Lodge by Joanne Andrews. Durham, NC
Through
the use of art and performance the Beaver Lodge Local 1504 educates the
public about wetlands protection in a fun and provocative way. The current reigning Beaver Queen, Fishscenta will be on hand to bestow blessings and deliver a Sermon on the Mons. Princess Lea Beaver and Fishcenta will work with attendees to create an improvisational performance piece during Transformus.
Plastarborea fluoroluminescens by Creatrix (Ilsa Ananda Door). Asheville, NC
The Ultra Violet Densiflora, a miracle of nature, is a living organism grown spontaneously from the waste of an enormously destructive industry. It is so
unique in that it also purifies water, making bacteria and
germ-infested water safe to drink. A living testament to the combined
powers of nature and technology, the Ultra Violet Densiflora reminds us
to look in unusual places for potential solutions to our problems.
