Principles

By Maya

So in 2004 we started the fire and several hundred people came together, and soon they came to realize they were a community. Since then more have been welcomed with open arms as we stroke the fire we have created. Now  we have  a chance to step back and gaze upon the flames and ask ourselves, who we are and what we stand for. We are a very diverse group of people, but we do share some common ideas.

After Transformus and amid some healthy debate, we agreed that in one way or another, through experience or just plain being born to it, that we were all BURNERS. That the art, philosophy, way,  lifestyle, etc.  of "burning"  wasn't so easily defined. We knew it was about sharing ourselves and who we each are, including our inherent arts, gifts and talents, and celebrating the moment, this thing called life, together. We dug not only being free to be ourselves but to be able to bring out the best in each other. We loved the overwhelming creativity and inspiration, the smiles and hugs, the crazy art, antics and fire, and the overall Mysteria vibe. And we knew we wanted to get together and do it again.

The rest of the story, our mission, our goals, where we are going...  well, we are writing that story, living it and figuring it out together along the way. For now we know that at the very least, we like the principles set out by Burning Man, and that we can live with those as we begin to write our own principles and guides. So we decided to start exploring what those mean to us. We know that like a child growing up, we will evolve and grow into our unique identity, and we invite you to join us in this transformative journey of discovery.

10 Principles of BM

(Southern Burn Style Principles)

By the Transformuses

Radical Inclusion

Doors always open. Y'alls  all welcome in our home.  Help yerself and stay a spell...

Gifting

Mama always said, it's better to give than receive. Givin' is gettin', what comes 'round goes 'round. You reap what you sow, so if ya got plenty of it, share it.

Decommodification

You put your heart into somethin' and its worth more than a few shiny pennies and so are you.  Ain't no buying fancy breeches or doo-dads, gonna make you a man, so just buy some humble pie and be thankful for whatcha got.   "A man's true wealth is the good he does in this world."

Radical Self-Reliance

In these parts ya take pride in doing for yourself, and if ya ain't gonna do for yerself don't expect anybody to go doing it for you. You got two hands, don't ya? "If yur gonna run with the big dawgs, ya gotta lern to pee in the tall grass."

Radical Self-Expression

Be yerself, however you reckon, "whatever floats yer boat" is fine with us. Just don't go getting all high and mighty when we do what we wants.

Communal Effort

Sometimes ya gotta get together to git er done.  If everybody pitches in, it gets done a helluva lot quicker.  A little bit a dirt on yer hands ain't gonna kill ya.

Civic Responsibility

We all gotta act like somebody... rights still right and wrong is still wrong.  Round here, we was just raised up to do the right thing, we reckun y'all kin do the same.

Leave-No-Trace

Your momma ain't  here to clean up after yer, so it would be mighty kind of ya, to not muss up our backyard. You aughta know better than that.  Junkyards just ain't purty to look at!!

Participation

Either fish or cut bait, but don't just sit there like a bump on a log.  Pee or git off the pot!!  Now quit yer gawking and pitch in.

Immediacy

Time's a wasting! We reckon now's as good a time as any.  Whatcha waitin fer? Chrissimas?

Have a gander at the original version of the Burning Man 10 Principles.

If you ain't from around here, well, we're going to get into what they all mean soon enough.  For now, you need to know that Transformus IS a southern style burn. Expect lots of southern hospitality, a good deal of smiling and g'mornings, and heaping helpings of common courtesy and just plain common sense. Treat everybody neighborly and with respect and we'll all get along just fine.
